I was ready to pounce on my brother and show him the photos the instant he entered the house, but he didn’t come back that night, and Mum refused to let me message him and drag him home from the office. So I gave up and went to bed, though sleep was elusive. I knew I should be resting for my next long day as Head Witch, but it was hard to forget that Harvey’s freedom might depend on my ability to convince my brother he wasn’t a murderer.

The following morning, I tried not to doze off at my desk while I looked over the day’s schedule. Among other things, I had a long meeting with the council, which included Aunt Shannon. While I felt bad for giving up on my attempt to help Tansy search for evidence of her nasty spider traps in the forest, picking a fight with my aunt while my brother and I were still at loggerheads would not have been the wisest idea. We’d retained a chilly silence during previous meetings, but that would change when I inevitably brought up her latest antics.”

Grandma’s ghost appeared behind me. “You’re back. Have you been practising using that sceptre?”

Not unless you count poking my brother. Maybe I should have given it a test run on Tomas after all.

“I have a three-hour meeting to get to, so our next magic lesson will have to wait until later,” I informed her. “I don’t suppose you can let me hang out on the other side of the grave for a few hours instead?”

“Not unless you want to stay here.” She gave a laugh that sounded more like a cackle. “I wouldn’t object to the company, if that’s what you want.”

I suppressed a shudder. “No, thanks.”

Leaving my desk behind, I made my way to the large room in which the council typically held their meetings. I’d grown used to the way everyone’s eyes watched me enter the room and take up my position at the centre of the table, and the derision in Aunt Shannon’s expression when she took a seat at the opposite end of the table barely registered. Mum sat on my right, and the others filed into the room around me in a rustle of cloaks.

When everyone was seated, I called the meeting to a start. One of the coven’s many ridiculous traditions dictated that I had to make the same speech regardless of what the meeting was actually about, but it was hardly one of the more heinous tasks appointed to the Head Witch.

“On the agenda for the day…” I consulted the paper I’d brought from my desk and read the items on the list one at a time, my heart giving an unpleasant lurch when I reached the last one. “…and the matter of meeting the other Head Witches.”

“We’ll start with that,” Aunt Shannon ventured. “I’m sure I’m not the only person wondering when the Head Witch is going to meet her equals.”

Mockery dripped from her words, while my hands fisted under the table.
